Metacam for Cats is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Metacam for Cats works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
Metacam for Cats is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in adults and children who are at least 2 years old.
Metacam for Cats may also be used for purposes not listed in Metacam for Cats guide.

Metacam for Cats side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using Metacam for Cats and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance;
black, bloody, or tarry stools;
coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
swelling or rapid weight gain;
urinating less than usual or not at all;
nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice ;
skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness; or
severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

Less serious side effects may include:

upset stomach, diarrhea, bloating, gas;
dizziness, nervousness, headache;
runny or stuffy nose, sore throat; or
mild skin rash.

Usual Adult Dose for Osteoarthritis:

Initial dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily
Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily
Maximum dose: 15 mg orally daily

Usual Adult Dose for Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Initial dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily
Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily
Maximum dose: 15 mg orally daily

Usual Pediatric Dose for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Greater than or equal to 2 years: 0.125 mg/kg orally once daily
Maximum dose: 7.5 mg orally daily

Who should not take Metacam for Cats?

Do not use Metacam for Cats just before or after heart bypass surgery.

This medicine may cause life-threatening heart or circulation problems such as heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term.

This medicine may also cause serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and can occur without warning while you are taking Metacam for Cats, especially in older adults.

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to Metacam for Cats, or if you have a history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs.

Metacam for Cats may cause a delay in ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). You should not take Metacam for Cats if you are undergoing fertility treatment, or are otherwise trying to get pregnant.
